Announcing Dana Goldman as Dean of the USC Price School of Public Policy

Message to USC Sol Price School of Public Policy Faculty, Staff, and Students

From: Charles F. Zukoski, Provost and Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs

On behalf of President Folt, I am pleased to announce that Dr. Dana Goldman has been appointed as dean of the USC Sol Price School of Public Policy. Dr. Goldman will hold the C. Erwin and Ione L. Piper Dean’s Chair. He has served as interim dean of the Price School since July 1, 2020.

As policy issues in health, social justice, planning, real estate, and administration have become ever more urgent, Dr. Goldman will continue to lead the Price School with vision and creativity. He supported faculty, students, staff, and alumni as they led national conversations on democracy and voting and conducted critical research that informed local and national responses to the COVID pandemic. Their work, and their forward-thinking partnerships with our local communities, help improve the quality of life for countless people.

Dr. Goldman is a Distinguished Professor of Public Policy, Pharmacy, and Economics. For 12 years, he directed the USC Schaeffer Center for Health Policy and Economics, one of our nation’s premier health policy programs within the Price School and the School of Pharmacy, and he has held the Leonard D. Schaeffer Director’s Chair since it was created in 2013. Prior to that, he held the Norman Topping Chair in Medicine and Public Policy. He will continue to serve as co-director of the Schaeffer Center where he pursues research into health care reform and helps promote practical and compassionate public policy.

One of the world’s leading health economists, Dr. Goldman is an elected member of the National Academy of Medicine and the National Academy of Social Insurance. His influential work spans more than 300 articles and has been cited in more than 19,000 publications. He has also edited numerous scholarly journals, including Health Affairs, American Journal of Managed Care and the Forum for Health Economics and Policy. His ideas often travel beyond the health policy sphere, reaching the public at large through his research and opinion pieces featured in major media outlets.

Dr. Goldman continues to shape the way global leaders address socioeconomic challenges. His counsel is highly valued by policymakers and he has served as an advisor to the Congressional Budget Office and the National Institutes of Health, among others. Prior to joining USC, he spent 15 years at the RAND Corporation while serving as director of its health economics program and its Bing Center. Dr. Goldman received his B.A. summa cum laude from Cornell University and his Ph.D. in economics from Stanford University.

We would like to thank the Dean Search Advisory Committee, chaired by Andrew Guzman, dean of the Gould School of Law, for its work and dedication to the Price community. We also benefited from consultation with a special group of friends of the Price School and we are grateful to them for their sound advice.

Please join us in congratulating Dr. Goldman and thanking him for his commitment to the Price School community.
