On behalf of President Nikias, I am pleased to announce the appointment of Dr. Vassilios Papadopoulos as dean of the USC School of Pharmacy, effective October 1, 2016. Dr. Papadopoulos will also hold the John Stauffer Dean’s Chair in Pharmaceutical Sciences.
On behalf of President Nikias, I am pleased to announce the appointment of Professor Amber Miller as dean of the USC Dana and David Dornsife College of Letters, Arts and Sciences, effective August 16, 2016. Professor Miller will also hold the Anna H. Bing Dean’s Chair.
Last November I wrote about efforts the university would undertake to increase access and opportunity, strengthen our commitment to diversity and equity, and ensure a campus climate that is inclusive of all. I noted that a commitment to diversity, inclusion, and equity has long been a part of USC’s history – from our first students in the late-19th century to current initiatives to increase access to higher education for disadvantaged, underrepresented, and first-generation students.
We are pleased to announce the USC Society of Fellows in the Humanities, an interdisciplinary community of junior and senior scholars that supports advanced research and intellectual exchange in the humanities and humanistic social sciences.
We are pleased to announce the Graduate Initiative for Diversity, Inclusion, and Access (DIA) to help our schools and programs increase diversity, create a more inclusive and supportive graduate culture, build new pathways to recruit highly qualified underrepresented students to USC, and support graduate students as they progress toward their professional goals.
I am writing to report to you the results of the recent vote on unionization and explain what happens next, and why. In the Dornsife College of Letters, Arts and Sciences, the vote was 113 yes and 127 no, thus rejecting representation by SEIU Local 721. (There were also 13 challenged ballots and 4 void ballots.)
One of the foremost “wicked problems” of our time is how we sustainably conserve our resources for future generations, while securing prosperity for all of us within the global community.
As many of you have heard me discuss often over the past six months, expanding student access and opportunity is a top priority for the University and a responsibility I believe we should embrace.
