Joseph T. Patterson

Joseph Patterson MD, FACS, FAAOS is an Assistant Professor of Clinical Orthopaedic Surgery and Director of Orthopaedic Trauma Research at the Keck School of Medicine of the University of Southern California. As an orthopaedic trauma surgeon, Dr. Patterson is an expert in the surgical care of complex fractures (broken bones) and deformities of the hip, pelvis, and limbs. He has extensive experience repairing difficult “problem” fractures that are not healing properly as well as congenital and traumatic limb differences.

As a mentored early-career investigator, Dr. Patterson has received over $11M in research awards from the Patient Centered Outcomes Research Institute, National Science Foundation, Orthopaedic Research and Education Foundation, Orthopaedic Trauma Association, AO North America, and James O. Johnston Foundation to conduct patient-centered comparative effectiveness studies. He has been recognized for “Game Changing” clinical research on the treatment of femoral neck fractures and is the inventor of next-generation implants for femoral neck fracture surgery. Dr. Patterson currently leads three pragmatic, multicenter clinical trials as the primary investigator and supervises the administration of 10+ additional multicenter trials of treatments for patients with severe limb injuries at Keck Medicine of USC and Los Angeles General Medical Center. He has authored more the 70 publications on the care of injured patients and has received Young Investigator and Career Development Awards from the American Association of Hip and Knee Surgeons, AO North America, and Western Orthopaedic Association.

Dr. Patterson holds a BS in Bioengineering from the University of California Los Angeles (UCLA) and MD with thesis from Yale University. He completed residency in Orthopaedic Surgery at the University of California San Francisco and a fellowship in orthopaedic traumatology at the University of Washington Harborview Medical Center before joining the faculty at Keck Medicine of USC.
