Peer‑to‑Peer Communication Could Look Different Under a Union Contract

Certain mandatory subjects are legally required to be bargained in good faith:

  • Wages
  • Hours
  • Working conditions
  • Other terms and conditions of employment

The University, Deans, Department Chairs, and other faculty leadership would not be allowed to deal with individual faculty directly on these subjects during the negotiation process and once an agreement is in place.

Everything must be negotiated by the union.

Communication Today

When faculty want to discuss special working arrangements, retention opportunities, or policy exceptions (such as promotion clocks), communication looks like this:

Direct faculty and department leadership communication.

Communication in the Future

If the United Auto Workers is chosen as the exclusive bargaining agreement, COMMUNICATION COULD CHANGE. Issues you might have gone directly to your chair or dean to discuss could instead be governed by the collective bargaining agreement.

Faculty communication routed through a union.

Remember: If the United Auto Workers is voted in, it will become the exclusive bargaining representative for you and all future faculty in the bargaining unit regardless of:

  • Whether you voted.
  • How you voted.
  • If you feel you should have been carved out of the bargaining unit.
